Agate 110 » Add to Gallery Agates form in empty pockets in volcanic rocks. Level bands such as this form in a central void left when there is insufficient material from the first infusion of silica to complete the concentric formations characteristic of banded agates. Size: 3cm. The strong sense of perspective produced by these parallel bands is created by the subtly varied colours and textures within and between them combined with a slight blurring produced by the way the slice cuts through the colour bands at a slight angle.
